The Moorings is thirty four homes beside the old rail trail greenway in Athlone: a twelve apartment block and the houses around it. Since 2025 it has been run directly by the people who live here, through Athlone Court Management CLG.
Owned and run by the people who live here
Athlone Court Management CLG is the owners' management company for the whole of The Moorings, the apartment block and the houses alike. Every owner is a member of it, and the board is made up of owners who volunteer their time.
Where we are
On the Ballymahon Road, a short walk from Athlone town centre, the bus and rail stations and the Old Rail Trail Greenway, with the Shannon and the GAA grounds close by. Thirty four homes in all, arranged around shared green space.
How it is run
Directly by its members since June 2025. Decisions are taken by the board and put to owners at general meetings, and the accounts, budgets and minutes are shared with every member. The budget is split between the apartment block and the houses, so each side pays for what it actually uses.
What we care about
Community, care and excellence. In practice that means a safe, well maintained, well insured building, honest accounts, and service charges that pay for real work.
What we are improving
Since taking over the management of the building we have worked through the things that had been left. Some are finished, some are under way, and some are planned.
The roof
On the apartment block, about 300 m² of flat roof and a further 25 m² over the lift shaft were prepared and sealed under a single seamless liquid-applied membrane, finished in dark grey, and completed in September 2026. It carries a 25 year labour and application warranty alongside the materials warranty.
CompletedBuilding access
At the apartment block, the old mechanical key system was retired in September 2026 and replaced with a managed fob system, so access can be issued and withdrawn properly and the building is no longer opened by keys nobody could account for.
CompletedFire and chimney safety
The fire alarm is under a maintenance contract, serviced to current regulation and monitored around the clock. Every apartment's chimney and fireplace was inspected under a dedicated safety programme, and a fire safety reserve now sits in the budget.
CompletedHouse rules
A clear set of house rules was written and adopted, covering common areas, works inside apartments, refuse, parking and how residents raise something with the board.
AdoptedSecure bicycle shelter
A lockable, covered shelter for residents' bicycles, built on a reinforced concrete base and designed in sections so it can be extended as the budget allows. Quotations are in and the base comes first.
PlannedCosts under control
Service contracts have been renegotiated and the work brought in house where it made sense. The saving went straight back to owners: the 2026 management charge came down on the previous year.

The greenway on the doorstep
The Old Rail Trail Greenway runs past the development, and the Shannon, Athlone Castle and the town centre are all within a short walk or cycle.
Getting about
Athlone bus and rail stations are close by, with regular services to Dublin and Galway, and there is parking on site for residents.
A small community
Thirty four homes is small enough that everyone's contribution counts. Owners and residents, in the apartments and in the houses, are kept up to date through a regular newsletter and through the residents' portal.

Owners and residents at The Moorings have their own portal. Budgets and accounts, the notice board, house rules, maintenance requests, documents and the newsletter all live there, and the board works from the same system.
